Post-Prohibition Old Fashioned
Before the prohibition, quality liquor was in abundance and citrus was rare and expensive. The prohibition and for years after saw a massive reduction in quality liquor and an increase in availability of oranges and other citrus.
This was the perfect storm for the old fashioned to evolve for decades. The citrus was cheap and balanced out the low quality liquor.
The Elements:
2oz Whiskey (Rye or Bourbon, I used @knobcreek Rye)
1 Sugar cube
2 Dashes @angosturahouse aromatic bitters
2 Dashes @angosturahouse orange bitters
1 Orange wedge
1 Maraschino cherry
Splash of club soda
The How To:
Make cocktail in rocks glass. First add sugar cube and squeeze orange wedge over sugar. Alcohol and old liquids prohibit dilution of sugar, so now's your chance to dissolve! Muddle together.
Add orange wedge and the maraschino cherry. Muddle together.
Add bitters and whiskey. Stir together.
Carefully drop ice cubes in glass. Stir a few rotations.
Finally top with club soda. Garnish with an orange peel and cherry.
Enjoy!
