Pre-Prohibition Old Fashioned

Pre-Prohibition Old Fashioned

Formerly known as the Whiskey Cocktail in the 19th century. This king of all classic cocktails originated before citrus was widely available or cheap. It was a simple drink, just whiskey, bitters, sugar, and ice. No garnish. Does this recipe sound similar to the Champagne Cocktail to anyone else?

Fast forward to modern times, we can spare the cost of a little orange peel garnish to elevate the drink's aroma and presentation. But today we keep it classic. Simple.

The history of The Old Fashioned is a winding road and we can only scratch the surface. Tomorrow we will talk about the muddled fruit brother, Post-Prohibition Old Fashioned.

The Elements

  • 2oz Whiskey (bourbon or rye, I used @oldelkbourbon, 100% recommended)

  • 1 Demerara sugar cube

  • 3 Dashes Angostura Aromatic Bitters

  • 1 Large square ice cube

The How To

  1. Add sugar cube to rocks glass. Dash bitters on top of cube to hydrate.

  2. Muddle sugar cube with the bitters.

  3. Add whiskey of choice over your sugar/bitters mash. Stir all ingredients. Alcohol prohibits sugar from diluting, so there will be sugar remaining on the bottom of the glass.

  4. Finally add sugar delicately to the glass you've been building the drink in. Stir a few rotations.
